You know those random jobs you've always wanted to do, but you never end up doing it? Well, that was working on a ranch for me.
This past summer my friend Ellie and I worked on a ranch out in New Mexico. We did everything from landscaping to babysitting to flanking cows. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime.
I learned so much about the cattle industry and that many if not most of the stigmas surrounding the industry are false. Although I am from Tennessee, I live in Boston now, and Boston has a very different view of the cattle industry.
The ranch was located in New Mexico, and I had never been to the South West before. The landscape there is wild (and the animals). I felt like I was in a Jonny Cash song. You could see for miles and miles, and you felt like you could almost touch the clouds because of the elevation.
Ellie and I did the classic post-college roadtrip. We packed up her Volvo station wagon two days after graduation, and drove to New Mexico. The roadtrip was honestly one of my favorite parts. We hit so many states I had never been to, saw the worlds largest mailbox in Indiana, and ran from Tornados in Kansas. I loved seeing new parts of the U.S. because each state really does feel like its own country. On the way back we drove to my hometown in TN and saw my friends for a day which was so fun.
All in all, if ever have the chance to do a random job, do it - you won't regret it!
